At this time of year many people are looking forward to a holiday ahead, but also thinking about how they can make their work work for them better than it did in the past. Some people will be thinking nervously about leaving their full time job to start a new business.
Since setting up my own business more than 6 years ago, I have been lucky enough to meet lots of talented people who have set up their own business and who have succeeded in creating a work life that is more rewarding for them personally.
Recipe for success
Over the years now I have built up a profile of the type of people who are most likely to be successful. The indicators to me that a person will succeed seem to be:
- The person has a drive to be self employed or own their own company. They understand that business can be lonely and difficult but they want to do it anyway.
- They have an expertise in their industry and usually already have a senior job in their chosen field.
- They have enough in the way of savings or capital to make it through the early setup phase of business.
- They have a plan as to how they are going to start out as well as where they want to take the business.
Get help
Personally, I get a lot of satisfaction with helping people forge their own path in business. Whether it is just helping to get modern accounting systems in place, or spending more time with a client to help them develop a detailed business plan, I enjoy seeing people move from those nervous first steps to being a successful business owner.
